What’s on your mind as we start 2020?

What's on your mind?

Did you notice I gave myself some time off from blogging at the end of 2019? My last blog post was December 18th and I suggested taking a look at Mint.com to get a handle on your budget during holiday downtime. I appreciate the hundreds of interactions and comments that happened on LinkedIn. It lets me know I am offering up good info.

I hope you all had a great holiday season and are hitting the ground running in 2020.

I stumbled into 2020 with that cold that’s going around. It’s a nasty one with lots of sneezing and coughing. Took me a full week to get through the worst of it. I hope it misses you entirely. But if it doesn’t I am going to compile a list of things I did while I was resting up later in this story.

There are so many things I could talk about this week… so I’m going to share three. Two business related thoughts and one that’s more personal.

Please, please personalize your invitations to connect to people on LinkedIn.

Mic mentioned to me last week that he is still getting invitations to connect on LinkedIn with the canned message. He thought it might be a good blog post reminder. And I agree. So here is the reminder… DON’T SEND CANNED INVITATIONS TO CONNECT ON LINKEDIN. Why? Read more here… we’ve covered it a bunch over the years.

California passes Consumer Privacy Act. Why should you care?

If you hadn’t heard, California passed a consumer privacy act along the same lines as GDPR in Europe. Businesses are subject to the CCPA if one or more of the following are true:

  • Has gross annual revenues in excess of $25 million.
  • Buys, receives, or sells the personal information of 50,000 or more consumers, households, or devices.
  • Derives 50 percent or more of annual revenues from selling consumers’ personal information.

Nobody is going to develop a solution that works for web visitors or companies in California, it is going to be a larger implementation of security and privacy controls that websites will need to have. Over the coming months, we are going to see WordPress theme and plugin developers bringing tools to the table to allow you to adhere to these rules (if they apply).

If you caught the cold that is going around, here are some things you can consider doing while you are resting up:

  • Watch Lost in Space – Season 2 on Netflix.
  • Watch the Kevin Hart Documentary on Netflix.
  • Read The Power of Zero. It’s time to think about tax consequences in retirement… especially before some key laws phase out in 2026.
  • If you like Science Fiction, check out the 28th Gate series.
  • I bought Trista a surprise gift… it’s a LEGO-like cruise ship. It’s produced by a company called COBI and it turned out to be a fun build. It looks amazing on top of one of the book cases in her office. The set was on sale for half price and I enjoyed building it a little bit at a time over 5 days.

There you go… Some of the things on my mind this week! Stay healthy… and if not, rest up and stay entertained. :) Talk to you next week!
