Hello friends! This week, I’m sharing a community focused story about an organization called PCs for People. We had an Entrepreneurs Alliance event there last week and I was blown away at their mission and success so far.

PCs for People provides rebuilt computers and mobile hot spots for people living at the poverty level that normally couldn’t afford internet for their house or a PC for their home. Tom Esselman is the Executive Director (he used to be at Hallmark and was instrumental in developing the greeting cards you open that play a song.)

Tom gave an inspiring presentation about the organization, pointing out three key metrics:

  1. They’ve provided more than 180,000 PCs at a cost of $50 or $100 based on the type of computer. (They charge a small fee for one simple reason. They’ve found that people take better care of the equipment when they pay something for it versus getting it for free.)
  2. They’ve provided 70,000 mobile hotspots with unlimited data at 4G speeds for $15 per month. That’s 70,000 homes in areas that are typically not served by fiber or cable internet providers.
  3. They’ve kept 8 million pounds of equipment out of our landfills.

I hope you will take the time to watch my 5 minute video about PCs for People. I share pics of our tour and I hope you’ll be inspired! If you have old computers sitting in a storage closet, PCs for People is certified to destroy the data on those PCs; for peace of mind when donating them… knowing they will be put to good use by people that need the help.
